Brand Positioning for Startups: The One Thing You Must Get Right Before Spending on Marketing.

If you skip positioning and go straight to marketing, you'll waste 40-60% of your budget. Here's how to define positioning that makes everything else work.

I once worked with a SaaS founder who had spent 8 lakhs on Meta ads in 3 months. His ads were well-designed. His targeting was decent. His landing page looked professional. But his conversion rate was 0.3%. When I asked him 'who is this for and why should they care?' — he gave me a different answer each time.

That's the positioning problem. If the founder can't articulate it clearly, the ads definitely can't. And if the ads can't, the customer has no reason to click, no reason to stay, and no reason to buy.

Positioning is not your tagline. It's not your mission statement. It's the one irreducible belief you want the market to hold about your company. It answers: who are we for? What do we do that nobody else does? Why does it matter right now?

To find your positioning: interview your best 10 customers. Ask them: why did you choose us? What would you have done if we didn't exist? How would you describe us to a friend? The language they use is your positioning. Not the language you wish they'd use — the language they actually use.

Once positioning is locked, everything gets easier. Your website copy writes itself. Your ad angles become obvious. Your content topics are clear. Your sales pitch is consistent. Positioning is the foundation. Without it, you're decorating a house with no foundation.

The best test: can every person on your team — founder, developer, designer, salesperson — explain what you do and why it matters in the same way? If not, your positioning isn't done.
