Why Startup Marketing Fails After Funding — And How to Fix It Before You Waste 10 Lakhs.

29% of startups fail because of marketing. Not bad products. Not bad teams. Bad marketing. Here are the 5 specific reasons and how to avoid each one.

I talk to funded founders every week who say the same thing: 'We're doing marketing but nothing's working.' When I dig in, it's almost always one of these five problems. Not sometimes. Almost always.

Problem 1: No positioning. They jumped straight to execution. Running ads, posting content, hiring agencies — but nobody stopped to ask 'what is our one message?' Without positioning, every piece of marketing is a guess. And guesses at 50,000 a month add up fast.

Problem 2: Wrong stage activities. Seed-stage companies doing enterprise marketing. Series A companies still doing founder-led sales with zero demand generation. Every funding stage has a marketing playbook. Using the wrong one is like wearing a suit to a beach party — technically dressed, completely wrong.

Problem 3: Vanity metrics obsession. 'Our Instagram grew 5,000 followers!' Great. How many became customers? Zero? Then those followers cost you money and delivered nothing. The only metrics that matter: pipeline, conversion rate, cost per acquisition, and revenue attributed to marketing.

Problem 4: Channel fragmentation. Trying to be on Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube, run Google Ads, do SEO, write blogs, launch a podcast — all at once, all badly. One channel done excellently beats five channels done mediocrely. Every time.

Problem 5: No systems, just campaigns. Campaigns end. Systems compound. A blog post that ranks on Google brings traffic for years. An ad stops the second you stop paying. The startups that win build systems — SEO, email sequences, content engines — not just campaigns.

The fix isn't spending more. It's spending right. Every founder I've worked with who shifted from random acts of marketing to systematic perception engineering saw their CAC drop and their pipeline grow within 90 days.
